3 Limiting Beliefs that Can Derail Your Health Progress (and the Biblical Truths to Combat Them)

What you believe is perhaps the single most important factor in your ability to achieve your health goals. More often than not, your beliefs precede your behavior. That is especially true when it comes to your health choices. Limiting beliefs are the roadblocks that may be keeping you from experiencing abundant health.

As a Christian, you need to ensure that what you believe is aligned with the truth of God’s word. If your mental foundation is faulty, then whatever health changes you’re trying to make are going to be short-lived.

Have you failed to achieve the health results for which you’ve been striving? The place to look for answers is in your core beliefs.

Read on to learn about three limiting beliefs that can derail your health and the biblical truths to combat them.


Limiting Belief #1 – My health problems are not my responsibility.

When you’re facing a health challenge, you may search outward rather than directing your attention upward and inward.

For example, you may…

  • seek out assistance from a health professional, then place your full reliance and faith on them to “fix” you. Pills and potions merely mask symptoms. You should seek out well-trained experts to support your health and wellness. The problem lies with never reflecting on how your own behaviors may have led to whatever condition you’re experiencing. The solutions the experts offer rarely will get to the root cause of your problem. You may get short-lived relief. However, you’re unlikely to experience true healing and wellness in the long term.
  • blame your genes, family history, environment, or other people for whatever health difficulty you’re facing. Certainly, all those factors can play a major role in the level of health you experience. However, the field of Epigenetics proves that the most important factor for our health is our personal choices. What we eat and how we live matter more than our genes. This paradigm is also much more closely aligned with the biblical principle of reaping and sowing than genetic predeterminism. We are responsible for our own health.
  • assume that you’re just the victim of bad luck or unfortunate circumstances. This attitude is a great way to ensure you experience feelings of hopelessness and helplessness. It will do nothing in terms of helping you to change or transform your health. If you believe that there is nothing you CAN do differently, then you likely won’t do anything at all. 

You’re Not Alone

If you’ve thought like this in the past, you’re not alone. Some of your beliefs might be rooted in the truth. Even so, it doesn’t absolve you from taking responsibility for your own life in accordance with God’s word.

Accepting accountability for where you are does not necessarily mean you are to blame for the situation you’re in. You’ve probably done the best you could with the knowledge and resources you had. Ignorance is a big contributor to health problems. Many Christians simply don’t understand the causal link between our lifestyle and health conditions.

But once you do know better, the next step is take full ownership of your health. Accept the reality that your individual choices are the biggest contributor to your health. Once you’ve done that, you can take full control of your own health outcomes.

If you want to reach a different level of health, you are going to have to fully own your personal choices as well as the results those decisions produce.

What to Believe Instead

A great place to start is by taking an honest assessment of your health.  God’s word says “You want me to be completely truthful. So teach me wisdom.” Psalm 51:6 (ICB).

Ask yourself a few probing questions, and be completely transparent with yourself. Here are a few examples:

  • Have I sought the Lord’s wisdom and direction before relying on someone else’s opinion about my situation? (See Proverbs 3:5-6)
  • Are there any attitudes, habits or behaviors that may be contributing to my condition? (See Psalm 139: 23-24)
  • Am I doing everything that I know to do to achieve health? If not, what is stopping me from reaching my goal? (See Deut 5:33)

In John 8:31-32 (ESV), Jesus said that “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” Seeking God’s direction through his word and prayer is essential if you hope to lead the kind of life God designed for you. To fully become the person he called you to be, you will have to get completely honest about your life, your beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors and how they may have set you on your current path.

Limiting Belief #2 – I’ll never be able to reach my health goals.

If you’ve repeatedly failed in the past, you may be feeling discouraged or frustrated. You may have even gotten to the point where you’re ready to give up completely on getting well. With every unrealized health goal, you risk sinking further into the belief that you’re too set in your ways to make lasting change. You feel that you’ll always be stuck.

The truth is reaching your health promised land will likely involve a lot of hard work, commitment, and struggle. In most cases, growth comes from difficulty. Embrace the hardship of change and reframe these challenging experiences as opportunities to develop new skills and flex new “muscles”.

What to Believe Instead

Even though God gifted the nation of Israel with the Promised Land, they still had to fight and battle to reach and keep it. The same can be true for stepping into your calling to care for your temple.

It’s a rare thing for anyone to master a new skill overnight. Rather than beating yourself up each time you miss the mark, give yourself some grace for the effort you are making in trying to improve your health.

Think of the new habits you are trying to form in the context of you as a toddler learning to walk. Can you imagine what would have happened when you were a one year old?  If falling down a few (or even a hundred) times after your first few attempts at walking caused you to just give up and throw in the proverbial towel, you’d still be crawling around on the floor or unsteady on your feet.

The important thing is to keep trying and striving.

“Repetition is the mother of learning, the father of action, which makes it the architect of accomplishment.” – Zig Ziglar

Here are a few verses to meditate on day and night for encouragement in staying the course:

  • “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” – Philippians 4:13 ESV
  • “No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it.” – 1 Corinthians 10:13 ESV
  • God is the one who enables you both to want and to actually live out his good purposes.” Philippians 2:13 (CJB)

Never give up on your goals as long as what you are pursuing is in God’s will. You can put complete trust in God’s power to achieve righteous goals through you no matter how difficult the path ahead.

Limiting Belief #3 – I can do it on my own.

One major limiting belief that you might have is the idea that you can succeed without the help of others. You may be reluctant to ask for help because you don’t know who to ask or where to start. You might be reluctant to ask someone else to hold you accountable for your actions because you’d rather keep your struggles private. Or you might believe that you really can do everything on your own.

The idea that you can succeed in a vacuum is misplaced. It is a rare thing for a person to just set a goal and reach it without any outside help whatsoever. Most will need some kind of support to make and sustain lasting change. In fact, one of the fastest ways to reach your health goals is to partner with someone who is already demonstrating mastery in the health and wellness arena.

The truth is you will waste an enormous amount of time, energy, and resources trying to learn and master everything related to optimal health on your own.

Also, keep in mind that willpower is finite and vastly overrated. Check your attitude to see if you are relying more on your own strength to change than the Lord’s.

What to Believe Instead

God actually designed us for community. As Christians we are commanded to “bear one another’s burdens” in Galatians 6:2 ESV and “pray for one another” in James 5:16 ESV. The idea that the community of believers will come together to support each member of the body is a foundational biblical principle.

The most important factor for your success is your reliance on the Holy Spirit and the power of God to transform you from the inside out.  

Jesus said in John 15:5  “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.”
